Saint Augustine's University is a private historically black Christian college in Raleigh, North Carolina. It was founded by Episcopal clergy in 1867 for the education of freed slaves. Following years of financial and leadership instability, the institution's accreditor, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, voted in December 2023 to remove St Augustine's from its membership and revoke its accreditation. Although an initial appeal by the institution was denied, SACSCOC reversed its decision following the July 2024 verdict of an arbitration panel, restoring the university to its former status as an accredited institution on probation. In December 2024, the university will reach the maximum possible period with its accreditor as an institution on probation for good cause, and will either have its probationary status removed or be finally stripped of SACSCOC membership.
